Medical Oxygen Plan – Not Only Business, It’s Need of The Day.

Covid Situation For At Least 5 Years

COVID-19 Pandemic has meant countries have effectively had to shut down, with many world leaders imposing stringent restrictions on the daily lives of billions of people. This pandemic may continue into the 1st half of the decade. Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, the World Health Organization’s chief scientist said “I would say in a four to five-year timeframe, we could be looking at controlling this.” She added that trying to control the virus would require a “massive effort,” even if a vaccine is found.

Need of Medical Oxygen

Oxygen is an essential medicine used to care for patients at all levels of the healthcare system, including in surgery, trauma, heart failure, asthma, pneumonia and maternal and child care. Pneumonia alone accounts for 800 000 deaths per year. It is estimated that 20–40% of these deaths could be prevented with the availability of oxygen therapy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated global demand for oxygen and made the delivery of oxygen supplies more urgent than ever. The need for oxygen has increased to 1.1 million cylinders in low to middle-income countries alone.

Growing Market

The global medical oxygen concentrators and oxygen cylinders market size was valued at USD 2.9 billion in 2019 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.2% from 2020 to 2026. Growing incidence of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPDs) and increasing technological advancements for the miniaturization of the oxygen concentrators are some of the key factors expected to drive the market over the forecast period.

The oxygen meant for industries will now be diverted for medical use due to the spike in coronavirus cases in the country. As India touches 16 lakh active Covid-19 infections, a number of states have reported shortages of medical oxygen for a growing pool of patients in need of oxygen support. India plans to import 50,000 metric tonnes of medical oxygen to cater to the rising demand. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has been directed to float a tender for the import.
