Our topic for today is the elements of a compelling story and the reason that we are discussing this today is because stories help motivate people to take action stories help make an emotional connection with people and stories of the way you deliver your message and bypass in most cases the critical thinking of the audience member that you want the audience member that you want to influence.
- The first element of a story is the audience and when we talk think about the audience. I want you to think about what they are looking to get out of your time together and what would be the most value you could potentially provide them.
- The second thing is what is the emotion you want them to feel people are motivated to take action based on emotion.
- The third element of a compelling story is the setting where this takes place and you need to put the audience there & they need to feel like they are a part of what’s going on.
- The fourth element is the back-story & make sure that people have a sense of context so that people understand what’s going on.
- The level of detail which is the Fifth element needs to be enough so that you have credibility but it shouldn’t be so much that it overwhelms people.
- The final point is the narrative, every story follows an arc, the set up, the build-up and then the payoff & the conclusion is where they feel the emotion that you want them to feel.
